My Nail Polish Bender (pt. 3) – Jeweled Topcoats and Essie’s Dive Bar

NAIL TREND #2: JEWELED TOP COATS

As I said in my video, I’m a big fan of jeweled top coats because they’re such a quick way to take your mani from day to night in a flash! Their transformative nail art power is CRAZY. Plus, seeing how I was on the hunt for inexpensive ways to upgrade my style this spring, I figured they’d make a pretty great addition to my nail cubby (yes, I’ve got a nail cubby. No judgment, please).

Nails Inc.’s Special Effects Overglaze Polish sets come with two polishes: one dark and very dramatic solid varnish and one iridescent and glittery top coat. The Sephora near 19th and 5th was selling three different combinations, but the Donmar Collection really stood out to me because it’s MAD FUNKY.

The solid is a burgundy called “Chelsea,” which also looks great on its own. The topcoat is called “The Donmar,” and has iridescent flakes that change from red to gold to green, creating a pretty trippy effect against the burgundy.

This makes for a great party mani. Plus, this shade of red is very sexy, but in a vampy and mysterious kind of way.

Pros: Smooth application. Rich color.

Cons: Effing expensive for a non-novelty two polish set ($20?! Are you for real?).

This look is also pretty customizable. You can pack on the glitter if you’re looking for something a little more flashy without being too Lisa Frank, or you could go for some subtlety. To me, a light application says I’m an educated lady who can appreciate a great Malbec, but sometimes I wake up with confetti in my underpants.

Another polish that I got which, unfortunately, neither films nor photographs that well on my camera is the latest limited edition Essie color, Dive Bar. It’s GLORIOUS.

It’s hard to tell, but this polish is a mixture of blue and purple, and it has a very sexy and sinister iridescence to it. As I described it in my video: it’s got the iridescence of an oil slick. Sexxxy. 😉

It does look really great on nails, though.

A few days ago, I decided to pair it with the Donmar top coat, and this is what happened:

What did I tell you about a manicure with a side of extra Donmar being flashy without being too Lisa Frank?! What I like is that the flecks in the Donmar topcoat look green from a certain angle.

From another angle, the flecks look more orange or bronze. The effect reminds me of the flames of a camp fire crackling into the night air. How romantic!

Pros: Easy application. Versatile solid (clearly works well underneath a glittery top coat).

Cons: None. It’s beautiful.

Who needs new clothes when one has a magnetic polish, a jeweled top coat, and two new solids? Nail polish benders are definitely shopping sprees for broke girls.

My Nail Polish Bender (pt. 2) – Magnetic Nail Polish

As I said in my latest haul video, two of my resolutions for 2012 include updating my personal style more frequently, and attempting new things with fashion that I previously didn’t have the opportunity to try.

Now, although these goals sound pretty simple, I’ve come to find that they’re far more difficult to fulfill than they appear. Perhaps the greatest obstacle in my way is the financial resources I would need in order to officially get cracking. Right now, being that I just got my Masters in Taxation, and I’m about to begin my (fortunately, paid) internship with no guaranteed job prospects following the tax season, money’s a little tight at Casa Size J. And, I think it goes without saying that idea that I may not be able to check these goals off my list fills me with TERROR.

It’s always funny when and how the answers to our most pressing problems (or in this case, mildly annoying fashion conundrums) present themselves. It was only a few weeks ago that I was in my local coffee shop pondering different ways I could update my look on the regular and on the cheap, when suddenly, an old friend tapped me on the shoulder. After speaking for a while, she brought up the fact that I still, after all this time, gesticulate wildly when I talk, and that’s when it hit me! The key to getting the ball rolling with my resolutions (and getting over the ex) had been waving me and my partners in dialogue right in the face during every conversation!

The solution to my problem lay in my hands. Literally. Nail polish bender!

NAIL TREND #1: MAGNETIC NAIL POLISH by Nails Inc. in “Trafalgar Square”

Pros: Smooth application. Hovering the magnetic cap over nails for different amounts of time yields different results (see below), leaving lots of room for experimentation. Ergonomically designed magnetic cap allows one to get close enough to the nail to warp the varnish without smudging it.

Cons: The application process is somewhat time-consuming (one must apply the second coat and hover the magnetic cap over each individual nail BEFORE moving on to the next nail OR THE POLISH WILL DRY AND IT WON’T WARP!). It took me a few times to get the effect I wanted for my video (the photos immediately below are from my first try).

I happen to like a more subtle, brushed aluminum finish like the one above but, as I’ve said before, you can hover the magnetic cap over your nail for different amounts of time in order to achieve different effects. For example, this is what happens when you hover the magnetic cap over your nail for 10+ seconds.

This, meanwhile, is what happens when you hover the magnetic cap over your nail for about 5 seconds.

The Sephora I had visited was selling three magnetic polish colors: Trafalgar Square, a red and a blue. The beauty of the three colors is that they each have their own effect when applied; the red looks like a crushed velvet, and the blue/teal, meanwhile, reminds me of an ocean wave, making it great for a more beachy look.

My LivLuna Giveaway Winnings and My Nail Polish Bender (pt. 1)

It seems like 2012 is shaping up to be a pretty amazing year. There are already so many developments in my life that I’d love to share with you!

1. I won LivLuna.com’s Winter Giveaway! The blog post I submitted on my winter style got me the most Facebook likes, helping me win a $300 gift certificate to LivLuna’s e-shop. I was so excited to see these beautiful little packages, wrapped up in their fancy tissue paper! 🙂

I needed some new and fresh workout clothes, and LivLuna has a fantastic selection of FUN AND FEARLESS fitness wear (that’s a whole lotta F’s) in addition to some really adorable dresses and whimsical and romantic tops (you should check out the Threads 4 Thought Starlight Beaded Tank — I got it for my friend Zafirah, since it’s definitely her style).

Want to see some of the other stuff I got with the gift certificate? Check out the video at the bottom!

2. I got an amazing tax internship through my friend Sanya’s roommate, Sakshi, who so kindly floated my resume to her supervisors. I’m so excited about starting on the 21st, and getting my career off to a good start! More details to follow! I can’t wait to figure out what I’ll wear on my first day!

3. I celebrated my birthday on Super Bowl Sunday, and boy, oh boy, was it a blast! I will be posting about it sometime over the next few days. I really loved my outfit, and I think that you will, too. 🙂

4. Yesterday three of my favorite gals and I celebrated Galentine’s Day!!! I thought it would be fun to create little Galentine’s Day goodie bags, just like Leslie Knope, so I included really cheesy Valentine’s Day socks (complete with stuffed hearts sewn at the ankles), a miniature bottle of vodka, dirty dice, Valentine’s Day erasers, and chocolates! The best part? We’re going to be visiting Montreal together this coming weekend!!!! I’m so excited! I can’t wait to see Montrealite street fashion, and make a few purchases by local designers! 😀

Yes, things seem to be coming together, and I couldn’t be happier! I have great friends, my teams have been doing well lately, and I will be making a little more money now that I have this internship. However, there is one thing that is still proving difficult for me: getting over the guy I dumped back in December. It was hard, but it was necessary, at least for now, and I’ve been having a hard time coping appropriately (whatever that means). Recently, I was hit with a bout of depression that, fortunately, was nothing a little retail therapy couldn’t fix.

Basically, I WENT ON A NAIL POLISH BENDER.

Check out the video, and don’t worry — pictures will follow over the next few days:
